Hirsch, who also lives in Scarsdale and bought the store with her husband in the mid-1960s, said the store's last day will be Jan. 31.

"This is the right time," Hirsch, an Ossining native, said. "How much more can I go on?"

Hirsch, who will be turning 100 next summer, said it is simply time for her to relax. Emily and Morris, who had a background in retail, were actually enjoying a retirement when they bought the store. Emily has been running the store herself since Morris passed away 25 years ago.

The longtime Scarsdale resident said she has enjoyed running a business in a "darling little town."

"Scarsdale is so charming," Hirsch said. "I've made a ton of friends and acquaintances."

Hirsch has been in business for long that customers she knew from the beginning bring in their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"People always come back to visit," Hirsch said. "There isn't anybody in Scarsdale I don't know."

People in Scarsdale are very upset by the news, Hirsch said.

"They keep saying 'we'll miss you and that it won't be the same,'" Hirsch said. "We're all local people that believe in supporting local businesses."

Hirsch said she will miss her friends, but not the routine of running her own business, which is a six day a week job. While she is retiring, she said she plans to stay in Scarsdale and has no desire to move to Florida.

"It's going to be a big change, but I'm ready to accept it," Hirsch said. "I've made so many friends here and I don't want to start all over again."

On Jan. 31, when she closes up the store for the last time, Hirsch said she expects it to be a very emotional day.

"I’m ready to accept it," Hirsch said. "I've been thinking about it for six months. My mindset is that this is just another step in one's life. You have to move forward."
