One of the more long-standing sights has been Poundridge Nurseries, which for more than 70 years and three generations has been providing a professional horticultural experience to both locals and visitors alike.

Lou Weinstock was part of the second generation of this full service business and is now the patriarch of the family still operating Poundridge Nurseries.

His grandfather Vincent Pasciuti was a New Rochelle resident when in 1924 he purchased the original 40-acre Lockwood estate. Starting with his children, Lou’s family has provided Pound Ridge with the best garden center for miles around.

During the peak spring season, Poundridge Nurseries provides vibrant geraniums as well as elegant looking hydrangeas and everything in between. During the fall season when things start to settle down from post-summer sales, Lou and his dedicated staff waste no time in preparing for their famous Christmas Shop.

It brings excitement to the holidays with the many trees on display, complete with an impressive arrangement of lights and ornaments. For everyone who stops in, this is the place to be for everything needed to decorate festively for both inside and outside.

From Thanksgiving through Christmas, they sell only the finest quality fir trees with the tallest ones averaging 15 feet – requiring a talented set-up crew that Poundridge Nurseries also provides to customers.

While families purchase custom designed wreaths at Poundridge Nurseries, kids who come in are able to visit with Santa during his weekend hours in the store. Another tradition Lou and his staff provide has been to give each child a Christmas tree seedling to be planted at home. Lou sees it “as a lasting legacy.”

The kids who came into the store years ago now have their own families and Lou takes pride knowing the seedlings handed out then have now matured into mature trees. With a new generation running Poundridge Nurseries, he is also confident his family business will continue to leave a lasting impression in representing the best Pound Ridge has to offer.

As for garden supplies, this too is impressive as Lou and his staff have a great selection of plants along with every type of soil and compost needed to maintain the perfect garden.

On a visit this past spring, I stopped in to inquire about a good planting soil. I drove out with a few bags of something consisting of grounded lobster shells. Not to say the flowers we planted did not deserve the best, but within a few weeks our garden started appearing to look the best as it has been in the past five years.

When it comes to landscaping design, the staff of Poundridge Nurseries has an outstanding reputation for working within any budget for problem-solving and providing clear explanation of the plans and installation of a first rate garden. Lou Weinstock and his family not only run a well-known business that attracts customers from all over the tristate area, but they are good neighbors as well.

Poundridge Nurseries is located at 6 Ridge Road, Pound Ridge NY, (914) 764-5781.
