Matt Stallsworth, manager of Rye Running Company, credited social media with spreading the word about Small Business Saturday.

"This is our chance to get a piece of the weekend shopping," Stallsworth said. "We can't compete with bigger stores, but the local community has supported us since we opened last year on this day."

Heidi Price, manager of Wallin & Wolf, said her store has been doing well since it opened in September, but  Hurricane Sandy greatly affected business. Price said Small Business Saturday has helped the store get back on track.

"People are motivated to come out and raise awareness about small businesses," Price said. "You see a lot of that in more affluent communities like Rye."

Melissa Warek, assistant manager of Benefit Cosmetics, said business has, been steady, adding that Small Business Saturday helps inform people that such stores are still around.

"They can go shop at the bigger stores, but they'd rather support small business," Warek said.
