Eastchester Enjoys Public Concert At Town Hall

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Great Lawn at Eastchester’s Town Hall was the place to be Wednesday night, as residents came together to enjoy 1950s hits as part of the Eastchester Summer Sounds Concert Series.

The band, Streets of the Bronx, had listeners out of their lawn chairs and on their feet dancing to party and dance favorites from the ‘50s and ‘60s. The popular band, coupled with perfect summer weather conditions, led to the largest crowd of the series so far.

“It’s a beautiful, nice evening to listen to a great band,” resident Louie Catano said. “We’ve heard the band before, they’re very popular, and really very good.”

More than 150 residents – many of whom were senior citizens – were tapping their feet to the beat and dancing with each other like they were 20 years old.

“This is probably one of the nicest nights of the summer, and this band has a large following – they’ve been here before,” Superintendent of Recreation Sally Veltidi said. “Some people are here every week, while others are here just because they enjoy their music. You get different crowds for different groups.”

In the past, the concert series has held a smooth jazz concert, as well as the Motown-singing Bob Larro Orchestra. Next week, Eastchester’s Teri Lamar and New Company will conclude the concert series with “hits from your lifetime,” spanning songs from the Beatles to Beyonce.

“The concerts provide a nice relaxed setting for the public,” Veltidi said. “A lot of people think you have to compete and be athletic to be active. This allows a large population to enjoy the outdoors and the community.”
