At Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle, they are instilling a core value of citizenship and service to carry on into the future lives of the young members.

Eight members from the Mascaro Clubhouse Torch Club took a trip to the Westchester County Legislature and met with County Legislator and Vice Chairman Jim Maisano.

Members received an overview of county government and then got to sit in the chamber and debate over important youth issues. The stakes were raised even higher when members debated about what to do with unhealthy snacks in the vending machine at the club. After 10 minutes of debate and a good amount of compromise, a consensus was reached to remove two rows of snacks the kids think are unhealthy and to replace them with healthy snacks. The Torch Club also agreed to hold a club wide vote to let members decide which snacks to remove.

A Westchester County proclamation named this week "National Boys & Girls Club Week" in the county.
