The Brass Behind the Byram Hills HS Graduation

ARMONK, N.Y. - While Byram Hills High School seniors were zipping up their gowns and adjusting their caps, juniors Chris Ramsey, Sam Freedman, and Alex Varnhajen sat at a local cafe relaxing before hitting the graduation stage. The three are members of the school's band and performed in the commencement ceremony for the second consecutive year.

"It's exciting to see our friends graduate and perform for them," trumpet player Freedman said.

The boys picked up their instruments for the first time in fifth grade and said they felt honored to be a part of their school's festive day.

"It's nice for us and it's important to our community," trumpet player Varnhajen said. "That only makes it that much more important for us."

Ramsey is a saxophone player in the band and said he and his friends have been playing their peers through graduation ceremonies throughout high school.

"It'll be a nice change to be able to walk next year and not play," he said.

Seniors walked in their graduation ceremony Tuesday night at SUNY Purchase College's Performing Arts Center.
