Diane Mintz did not have much time to enjoy the ice cream cone she got from Stamfords Dairy Queen Wednesday afternoon, as it melted quickly under the strong summer sun. With the large crowd the ice cream shop attracted during lunch time, not everyone found a spot in the shade.
Temperatures are supposed to remain in the mid-90s Wednesday afternoon as the sun continues to beat down on Stamford, the National Weather Service forecast says. The city will get a break from the heat Wednesday night when temperatures drop down around 70 degrees.
Thursdays conditions are expected to be even worse as temperatures may reach as high as 95 degrees, the forecast says. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, but only 20 percent, the forecast says.
The heat wave should break Friday, when temperatures are expected to remain in the 80s before dropping into the 70s for the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms are also possible for Friday and the weekend.
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection issued an Air Quality Alert for southern Fairfield County from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday night. The alert is issued because the ground level ozone level exceeds levels for unhealthy or sensitive groups, the Department of Environmental Protections website says.
To combat the heat wave the city is facing this week, Stamford has opened up cooling centers throughout the city for Wednesday and Thursday. The cooling centers are the Government Center from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and all Stamford Fire and Rescue stations will be open 24 hours.
