SOMERS, N.Y. -- Somers High School bid farewell to 256 graduates on Wednesday, beneath a huge white tent on the lawn at Primrose Field.
Dressed in red and white caps and gowns, the students marched down the red-carpeted aisle as the Somers High School Symphonic Band played the traditional "Pomp and Circumstance."
The Salutatory Address was delivered by Michelle Battipaglia, who will be heading for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall.
Brief speeches were delivered by Somers High School Principal, Irene Perrella, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Raymond Blanch and Lucia Vece, President of the Board of Education.
In an interview with The Daily Somers several weeks ago, Valedictorian Isaac Shelby said that he and his classmates "have gone through 12 years of school together. We've all had unique experiences."
At graduation he noted that the class was saying "farewell, not just to the people we have met and lived with and the places we have been. As cliché as it sounds, this marks the end of our childhood."
After diplomas were presented the Class of 2011 marched briskly back up the red carpet, apparently ready to take on the next phase of life.
