Elmsford Resident's Car Hit by Unknown Driver

ELMSFORD, N.Y. -- John Jones said his 1996 Honda Accord was hit by another vehicle while parked in front of Frank’s Food Court café yesterday morning at Elmsford. He said the driver of the vehicle left the scene.

Jones kept repeating a short sentence when he recounted the incident.

“I am pissed!”

He said he goes every morning to Frank’s, located on East Main Street next to Staples, and that he was talking to his friends when an employee told him that his car had been hit. He then called the police.

“I was sitting still, having coffee, and somebody hit my car,” he said.

Elmsford police blotter confirmed that a unit responded to Jones’s call at 8:23 a.m. The blotter described the incident as a hit-and-run, but Stephen Foster, Elmsford Chief of Police, said that he needed to talk to the detective investigating the case before he could provide more information.

Frank’s employee Carlos Leon said that he was at the counter when he saw a man saying that he had hit a “black Honda” (Jones’s car is dark green). The man repeated it a few times, but Jones didn’t pay attention because he was chatting with other patrons, Leon said.

“The guy waited for over five minutes,” Leon said, adding that, half-hour after the man left, he went outside to make a delivery and recognized Jones’s car.

“He looked at the car and was surprised,” Leon said about Jones. “Oh, my God! Oh, my God!” he heard Jones saying.

Jones, 76, of Elmsford, who has been married for 51 years and has “raised two fine men,” said that, despite his anger, he won’t carry the case forward if the offender pays for the damages, which he said a body shop estimated to be $2,000.

“Get it fixed, I am done. No hard feelings,” Jones said.

Leon said that he believes the man who hit Jones’s car will show up at Frank’s to settle with Jones.
