For Rivalry Showdown

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- A simple trophy made of wood and bronze sits in Port Chester High School's athletic office, but it is representative of something greater - victory. "We've had that trophy for two years," said Nick Mancus, assistant coach for the Port Chester Rams varsity football team. "And we want to keep it that way."

The Rams will face off against longtime rivals the Mamaroneck Tigers 7 p.m. Friday at Mamaroneck High School's Memorial Field.

Head Coach Greg Domestico said the rivalry goes back to the 1920s. The trophy was introduced in 1994 by retiring athletic directors Roy O'Neill and Tony Zambalatti, of Mamaroneck and Port Chester, respectively.

The two teams have vied for the trophy 14 times since 1994, with Port Chester leading in wins 8 to 6.

"It's a good atmosphere," Domestico said of the annual match. "And it's a lot of fun."

Team captains Jason Esposito and Jahien Seabrook have been preparing the other players. "They know how important the game is," said Esposito, a junior. "We just want to make sure everyone is mentally prepared."

Seabrook said there's a lot at stake. "It's the big game," said Seabrook, a senior. "We're playing for the trophy."
