STAMFORD, Conn. ? Dolan Middle Schools Dumpster Divers were honored for their recycling initiatives Tuesday in a ceremony marking America Recycles Day.
They are changing not only the culture at Dolan, but in the community, Principal Charmaine Tourse said of the 17-member recycling club. She added that the club has gotten the entire school to recycle by separating items that are thrown out from the cafeteria.
Every Thursday, the Divers collect the recycling bins in each classroom, sort it the contents and dispose of it correctly. The club also came up with the idea to wear green and have students bring in recyclable items to celebrate the day.
Its fun, and awesome, club member Kasey Borjas said. The seventh-grader added that since joining the club she has recycled a lot more at home.
Mayor Michael Pavia, Acting School Superintendent Dr. Winifred Hamilton and Supervisor of Solid Waste and Recycling Dan Colleluori were at Dolan to congratulate the student recyclers.
Hamilton, a former Dolan principal, said the students are putting theories and lessons they've learned into practice and are taking on the role of teachers as they pass their practices on to others. They are vested in doing it right, she said.
While the Dumpster Divers donned green Oscar the Grouch T-shirts to celebrate American Recycles Day, their classmates, teachers and other Dolan staff members also wore the color. And students who brought in five items for recycling received green bracelets.
