MAMARONECK, N.Y. While grocery shopping this weekend at the A&P, Stop & Shop or Shop Rite, the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force Food Pantry is asking for donations of nonperishable food for its annual "Have a Heart for the Hungry" food drive.
The food drive, in partnership with the United Way, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the A&P on Mamaroneck Avenue and Stop & Shop on W. Boston Post Road. Donations will be accepted at Shop Rite on Palmer Avenue in New Rochelle on Sunday only.
The whole community comes together around our annual food drive and it makes for a wonderful event, said Melinda Lehman, president of the food pantry. Stores get involved, families volunteer, and shoppers pitch in to help. Our clients truly appreciate the variety and quality of the food that is donated and feel supported by their neighbors.
Each time the pantry is open, over 1,100 residents from Mamaroneck or Larchmont are served, a number that jumped after the 2007 nor'easter and have yet to relent, Lehman said. Children make up 1/3 of the people we feed, Lehman said in a statement.
Our clients come from all walks of life: senior citizens, working poor families, unemployed and disabled people, Lehman said. Some people only need help temporarily, but every week new people come to us for help people who would otherwise have to choose between paying the rent and medical bills, or having enough to eat.
Residents shopping at Stop & Shop can also purchase a paper turkey for $1, $3 or $5 at the checkout.
All funds raised will be donated to the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force. To learn more, volunteer, or donate, visit the force's website.
