Residents Sound Off On Rivertowns Square

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Rivertowns Square project has been the talk of the village lately as the board of trustees has held public work sessions reviewing the project’s application for completeness.

The Rivertowns Square project would redevelop an existing 17.7 acre commercial property bordered by Stanley Ave., Lawrence St., Livingston Ave. and Danforth Ave. The proposed project would include a multi-story residential building with 223 units and a parking garage, a 107 room hotel, a 70,000 square foot supermarket, nearly 30,000 square feet of various retail space in three buildings and approximately 6,400 square feet of retail/restaurant space in two buildings.

The development would replace current office buildings, parking and loading areas that take up approximately 200,000 square feet.

As the application nears completion, local residents have begun to sound off on the project. “I think it’s great, I think it’s going to save the village,” said Dobbs Ferry resident Paddy Steinschneider.

Others are not so fond of the project and what it could potentially mean for the village. “As currently constructed, I think it’s a major issue,” said David Gralnick, who lives down the street from the site plan’s location.  “The extra traffic is going to be a nightmare.”

Residents have been hearing about the potential project for months as it has been back and forth with the local village boards.  Steinschneider said he believes the project will be a huge asset for Dobbs Ferry and the majority of the village approves of it.

“I’d say if you put it up to a vote, 70 percent of the village would say, ‘yes,’” he said.  “People should be able to shop locally.”

Gralnick said he would like to at least see the project tweaked to help benefit local residents more. “I’m hoping we can change it to meet the needs of this town,” he said.  “The town needs to fit the project to its needs.”
