Meek and Mighty Triathlon to Bolt Through Harrison

RYE, N.Y. - Westchester's shortened Meek and Mighty triathlon will return Sept. 24 as part of the 27th Annual Jarden Westchester Triathlon. The event includes a 300-yard swim, six-mile bike ride and a one-mile run.

The course is designed for triathlon rookies, including teenagers over 15 years old, seniors and others unable to pursue the training schedule required by longer-distance triathlons.

“This race offers a healthy goal, which a family can work together to achieve,” said Phil Gormley, chairman of the Westchester Triathlon Committee. “Crossing the finish line together is more than a physical accomplishment, it's a lasting memory.”

The Meek and Mighty debuted last year and attracted residents seeking personal challenges and goal achievements.

“If you're turning over a new leaf, trying to live healthier, or power through a midlife crisis, then set a goal to finish a triathlon like this,” Gormley said.

The event is open to anyone 15 years and older and will take place right after the Kid’s Triathlon for seven to 14-year-olds. On average, the course can be completed in less than two hours.

Participants must supply their own equipment, including a bicycle.

Registration fees are $50 per individual or $65 for relay teams. Tips for first-time triathletes as well as event details can be found on the Jarden Westchester Triathlon website at www.westchestertriathlon.org.

A Meek and Mighty training session is also available on Aug. 18 at 4:30 p.m.

The Jarden Westchester Triathlon annually hosts more than 1,200 amateur and professional triathletes. From its starting point at Rye Town Park, the Olympic-distance event includes a .9 mile swim in Long Island Sound, a 25-mile bicycle ride through scenic Westchester County and Greenwich, Conn., and a 6.2-mile run through parts of historic Playland Amusement Park and the streets of Rye.

All proceeds will be donated to the Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Rye YMCA, the “Mac Angels” foundation for ALS, the Challenged Athletes Foundation and The Wounded Warriors Project.
