Johnson recently completed the first year of her five-year appointment with the NYSED. At the June 2 meeting, she will deliver a personal narrative on unanticipated challenges she faced, and discuss how recent philosophical shifts on the Board may affect Scarsdale schools.
As the Judicial District 9 appointee to the Board of Regents, Johnson represents school districts in Westchester, Dutchess, Putnam, Orange and Rockland Counties.
A lifelong educator, Johnson came out of retirement in 2012 to help turn around the Mount Vernon School District. Her previous stops included a decade-long stay as Superintendent of Schools in Peekskill, where she twice earned “most improved” accolades from the NYSED. She was also a special advisor for the Clinton administration.
Under Johnson’s guidance, graduation rates rose in every district where she took the helm.
In 2008, Johnson was honored by the state Council of School Superintendents as Superintendent of the Year. She also spent time as an education official under the Clinton Administration. Throughout her career, Johnson was a fervent supporter of “leave no child behind.”
The meeting gets under way at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 in the Scott Room at the Scarsdale Public Library. Preceding the meeting, there will be a reception with light refreshments at 7:30 p.m.
