Kurtis-Stewart will be joined by fellow faculty member pianist Benita Meshulam, as well as guest artists Jessie Montgomery on violin, Alva Anderson on viola and Akua Dixon on the cello.
The program will include a mix of classical and jazz-inspired pieces. Music from Bach, Bartok, and Monk will be featured in the contemporary portion of the program. There will also be two original compositions: Efua for String Quartet, by Dixon and Zeimbekiko for String Quartet by the featured artist.
Kurtis-Stewart was raised in Poland, and learned about her Greek roots by listening to traditional European classical music. She graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory and has performed with the Warsaw Grand Opera Orchestra. She has performed internationally with some of the finest composers and musicians in the world.
Ensemble Elektra, which was formed and led by Kurtis-Stewart, represents a blend of the artist’s varied musical experiences. It fuses contemporary jazz and western classical music with hip-hop and ethnic music from Greece, Egypt and Poland.
The concert will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Greenville Community Church in Scarsdale. Tickets will cost $18 for general admission, $15 for seniors and will be free for students. To make reservations, call (914) 723-1169.
