There's a a good reason for that. It wasn't just cold, and it wasn't just cold for February. The big chill across the area set a record for the coldest average monthly temperature at nearby official record-keeping spots in Bridgeport, Conn., and Islip, N.Y., according to the National Weather Service.

Is relief in sight? The answer may well yes and no at the same time. While the dangerous cold temperatures that have gripped the area are highly unlikely to return,  colder than normal temperatures in March are predicted in the Northeast by Weather Services International. You can check out the forecasting company's prediction here.

The average temperature for February 2015 at Bridgeport was 19.9 degrees. This broke the old record for the coldest average monthly temperature for February, set in 1978 with an average temperature of 24.1 degrees.
