EASTCHESTER, N.Y. The Tuckahoe-Eastchester Girl Scouts planted flowers and picked up trash as part of the Eastchester Beautification Foundations Paint the Town Gold initiative.
Girl Scout Troop 2512 planted mums around the Eastchester Public Library in an effort to make their neighborhood a more beautiful place to live and to encourage local residents and businesses to do the same. It was part of a town-wide project that celebrates the arrival of autumn. The girls prepared the planting beds by first picking up garbage and pulling weeds. They then planted a dozen yellow, red and purple mums in front of the library and in the reading garden by the side entrance on Oakridge Place.
The scouts did this as part of the Paint the Town Gold project, which strives to make Eastchester a more beautiful place to live, work and play each season.
The foundation is hoping that residents and businesses will plant yellow and gold mums, along with other fall colors and plants, at their home or business, Girl Scout volunteer Judy Fix said.
The EBF, a non-profit organization, has been dedicated to beautifying Eastchester since 1971. It works with the town boards, departments, committees, residents and businesses to improve signs, buildings and plants around town.
