EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Downtown Eastchester and Bronxville will be getting a makeover, as town officials unveiled new banners to celebrate its 350th anniversary.

The burgundy banners, featuring tan lettering celebrating the founding of the town in 1664, will adorn light poles in the business districts of Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville throughout the spring and summer.

Eastchester Town Supervisor Anthony Colavita said that the imagining of the banners was a collaborative effort between several town departments and employees.

“This was a total cooperative effort to support the anniversary celebration,” he said. “Although the town has provided the approximate 100 banners, they were designed, ordered and installed in consultation with the Eastchester Beautification Foundation, the Highway Department, Tuckahoe Department of Public Works and the Bronxville Chamber of Commerce.”

Eastchester has been hard at work planning the town’s 350th birthday for nearly a year , beginning with a library program based around author Jane Ziegelman’s book “ 97 Orchard ,” as the town and villages ramped up towards this year’s celebrations.

This year alone, Town Historian Richard Forliano helped the Bronxville Rotary Club celebrate the anniversary with a lesson on its history. Eastchester students have gotten in the act, showcasing the town’s local history and Ziegelman led a lecture at Concordia College.

When prompted, resident Steve Harris said that he was a fan of the anniversary banners.

“I think they look good, they’re very crisp and get right to the point,” he said. “It’s good for visitors to know that we take pride in our town, and that’s what they’ll see when they drive through.”
