Eastchester's Polpettina A Top Spot For Gluten-Free Dining In Westchester

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Increasing amounts of people are giving up gluten, by necessity or choice. So much so that, nowadays, it's pretty easy to find gluten-free products at your local grocery store.

But what's a gluten-free eater to do when it's time to go out to eat? Luckily for them, several restaurants in Westchester have added gluten-free options and even gluten-free menus to their repertoire.

Gluten-free diets excludes foods containing wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt and their derivatives.

Here are some of Westchester's many restaurants that offer gluten-free options.

1. Polpettina (Eastchester)

With its large emphasis on bread (pasta, pizzas, calzones, you name it), Italian cuisine is no easy feat for gluten-free eaters. Luckily, while Polpettina's pizzas are still off-limits, all of their pasta dishes can be prepared gluten-free for $2 extra. Good thing, because the Truffled Carbonara, prepared with roasted mushrooms, pancetta, farm egg and pecorino is too good to give up ($11, $18). 102 Fisher Ave.

2. Bareburger (Hartsdale)

Thanks to Bareburger's gluten-free tapioca rice burger buns ($0.75), you won't have to give up the All-American favorite. Pile on your favorite toppings to one of their many protein options, or go with one of their signature combos. This organic-only burger joint also serves up plenty of gluten-free appetizers, including a artisan pickle sampler plate ($7.95). 265 N. Central Ave.

3. Three Dogs Bakery (Briarcliff Manor)

Three Dogs Bakery is an entirely gluten-free facility where the gluten-sensitive can enjoy their favorite treats (cookies, cakes, muffins, cupcakes, rolls, breads, etc.) without risk. No gluten is allowed anywhere near their confections. Additionally, many of their items are dairy, soy oil and soy flour free. 510 North State Rd.

4. Deanna's Pizza (New Rochelle)

Though we already covered Italian, pizza needs its own category. Giving up pizza can be a sizable challenge for any New Yorker. This New Rochelle pizzeria serves Still Riding Pizza, a well known gluten-free pizza dough provider. Enjoy the classic pizzeria experience, along with a number of gluten free pastas. 1284 North Ave.

5. Umami Cafe (Croton-On-Hudson)

A mix of Asian fusion and comfort food, Umami's menu is constantly evolving and change. However, ever present are a number of savory and creative gluten-free options. Umami also has accommodations for vegetarians, vegans and those who prefer low fat. 325 South Riverside Ave.

I'm sure we missed some great places with gluten-free options. Tell us where you go and why.
