According to officials, there has been an 86 percent increase in confirmed influenza cases in the past week, including confirmed cases in every Hudson Valley county.

In Westchester, Orange, Rockland and Dutchess Counties, there have been as many as five cases reported for every 100,000 residents in the past week. In Putnam, cases have previously been reported to officials, but there has been no spike in the past week.

CBS reported earlier this week that an elderly woman in Connecticut died from the flu. In Phoenix, a 20-year-old mother of two died a day after being diagnosed with the flu. There have been 1,240 confirmed influenza cases in New York this year, including 395 last week.

Health officials said that all people 6 months and older are recommended to receive an influenza vaccination each year. Depending on vaccine type available the vaccine will protect against either three or four different influenza viruses. Certain people are at "high risk" of serious complications from seasonal influenza. These include people 65 years and older, children younger than 5 years old, pregnant women, and people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions.
