Officials announced that there will be a workshop led by Mount Vernon Deputy Corporation Counsel Brian Johnson over the weekend, which will educate locals about how they can seal up to two convictions - only one felony - under New York State’s Criminal Procedure Law.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Grace Greene Baker Community Room at the Mount Vernon Public Library.

Johnson said that all convictions can be sealed other than sex offenses, Class A and violent felonies after a 10-year waiting period, from the date of conviction or release from prison. He said the sealed records will remain available to law enforcement and some licensing agencies, but would be unavailable to the public.

According to officials, “the New York Human Rights Law has been amended to cover convictions sealed under this new authority, thereby prohibiting public and private employers and occupational licensing agencies from asking about, or taking adverse action based on, a sealed conviction.”

The panelists at the workshop will include Johnson, Elena Falcone of the Westchester Library System Outreach and Re-entry Services and Tamika Coverdale, the Region Chief of the Mount Vernon Criminal Division.
