Reeve Foundation Grant Aids Music Therapy Program In Westchester

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation has awarded the Music Conservatory of Westchester a $6,075 Quality of Life grant, which the school will use to fund its Music Therapy Institute.

The foundation distributes these grants to non-profit organizations that provide more opportunities and access to a better quality of life for individuals living with paralysis, there families and caregivers.

“We are thrilled and honored to be the recipient of a grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation,” said Jean Newton, executive director of the Music Conservatory of Westchester “Dana Reeve grew up in Westchester and had a close connection to our community. In fact, she attended high school in Edgemont, where I live and raised my family. This grant will allow us to bring the joy of music to children with cerebral palsy and other neurological disabilities starting this fall.

“Our programs will enrich their lives with music activities that are therapeutic, motivating and educational.”

Christopher Reeve, who died in 2004 at age 52, was an actor, producer, author and activist. Dana Reeve, the former Dana Morosini, is a 1979 graduate of Edgemont High School who grew up in Greenburgh. They spent most of their married years living in Pound Ridge.

The music therapy program is intended to help students alleviate pain and stress while enhancing communication, language development and social interaction.

The grant awarded to The Music Conservatory of Westchester is one of 73 grants totaling more than $537,550. Quality of Life grants are funded through a cooperative with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. For more information, click here

The Music Conservatory of Westchester was established in 1929 by a group of musicians including renowned cellist Pablo Casals. It offers music education for all ages and abilities in classical, jazz, rock and pop. For more information, visit their website by clicking here.
