Report: Eastchester Donates Less Than Other Towns

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Village of Tuckahoe and the Town of Eastchester have not been as generous as other Westchester municipalities, according to the results of “How America Gives,” a study recently released by The Chronicle of Philanthropy that measures charitable donations from communities around the country.

Tuckahoe ranked at 2,780 in total contributions and Eastchester landed at 2,521 out of more than 11,000 municipalities nationwide. Tuckahoe residents donated $7.2 million, and Eastchester residents contributed $8.5 million in 2008. The data were collected based on exact dollar amounts released by the Internal Revenue Service from 2008 that show the value of charitable deductions claimed by American taxpayers.

To protect privacy, the IRS didn’t provide data regarding which charities the communities supported, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy . The Chronicle of Philanthropy included only taxpayers with a reported income greater than $50,000 to avoid discrepancies in the data from those who make less.

In Tuckahoe, the wealthiest residents, those who make more than $200,000 annually, contributed 2.7 percent of the village's total contributions, while those making between $50,000 and $99,999 each year were responsible for 10.4 percent of donations.

In Eastchester, 25.8 percent of donations came from residents under age 20, lower than the national average (27 percent), but slightly higher than the state average (25.3 percent). Just 7.6 percent of donations came from the 20-29 age range; 20.1 percent came from the 30-44 age group. Residents between 46 and 64 contributed the largest percentage, 27.8, and senior citizens were responsible for the final 18.7 percent of all donations.

Tuckahoe had a median contribution of $2,541, good for 4.2 percent of residents’ median income. Eastchester had a median donation of $2,578, 4.3 percent of income..

Westchester was nearly in the top 10 most charitable counties, ranking 12th out of 3,115 counties across the nation and contributing $1.2 billion. The median countywide contribution was $2,796, amounting to 4.6 percent of income. New York state was the second most generous in the country, with a total of $11.3 billion in contributions — with the median gift being $2,266, or 4.7 percent of income.
