Earlier this month, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas announced plans to create a brand new dog park out of an overgrown and unused grassy area off of Devonia Avenue, making it the first off-leash dog park in Mount Vernon.

However, according to a News12 report, Mount Vernon residents have expressed misgivings regarding the proposal.

If it’s completed, the Devonia Avenue park would be Mount Vernon’s only off-leash dog park, “giving our furry residents an open space where they can be free to run and play, and giving our non-furry residents a space where they can enjoy their pets and the city’s green spaces,” Thomas said.

No timetable has been set for when the dog park may be opened.

“This is one of the many abandoned parks that we are repurposing to make Mount Vernon more pet-friendly,” Thomas added. “Fido deserves a safe place to play just like our kids do.”
