TUCKAHOE, N.Y. -- Call it Oktoberfest in February. Or at least another excuse to drink beer. Broken Bow Brewery , the one and a half year old family-owned brewery in Tuckahoe, is planning its First Kölsch Fest on Feb. 21 complete with freshly brewed kölsch beer.
"We have a lot of German customers that come into the brewery and one day we got to talking about making a kölsch and about Carnival in Cologne, Germany," said Kristen Stone, founding partner and head of marketing on how the idea came about.
The all-day festival, with food music and optional costumes will celebrate "Carnival" in two sessions.
Customers have their choice of coming between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. with music by John James and Matt Garrison, or opt for the night session, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. with music by Bear's Choice. There is also a "Designated Driver" option.
All food will be sold by Growlers Beer Bistro . "We are basing everything off the history of Cologne," added Stone, who lives nearby in Scarsdale. "They have one of the best 'Carnivals' in the world and the original kölsch beer was made there."
The beer itself tastes like an American lager, explained Mike LaMonthe, head brewmaster and founding partner (and Stone's brother). The Mount Vernon resident pointed out that it's "crisp and refreshing with a lot of character." Other Broken Bow brews will be on tap as well "just in case" customers want other options.
Tickets are already selling fast. Go to www.brokenbowbrewery.com/ for more information. The brewery is located at 173 Marbledale Rd, Tuckahoe, 914-268-0900.
