Tuckahoe Parents Get Life-Saving Lesson

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. -- Heroin use may have taken dozens of lives in Westchester, but there are now folks in Tuckahoe who no longer have to feel so helpless in the face of the harrowing epidemic, according to a report by cbslocal.com.

The Maxwell Institute in Tuckahoe recently trained parents and other people how to use the life-saving, anti-opioid medication naloxone, to revive loved ones who may have overdosed on heroin.

Parents and others recently took part in a program that taught them how to administer the anti-opioid medication, naloxone, the generic name for Narcan, if their children, or anyone else, overdoses on drugs, cbslocal.com reported.

The Maxwell Institute, a Tuckahoe clinic that offers substance abuse treatment services, conducted the training and gave participants free naloxone kits to take home, the cbslocal.com story said.

Although fear and denial can thwart the fight against the disease of addiction, experts say, there were no such feelings at the class Tuesday; parents expressed gratitude for being given the chance to be fully education, and, perhaps, to save a loved one’s life, cbslocal.com reported.

The Maxwell Institute is associated with St. Vincent's Hospital in Harrison.
