TUCKAHOE, N.Y. -- Heroin use may have taken dozens of lives in Westchester, but there are now folks in Tuckahoe who no longer have to feel so helpless in the face of the harrowing epidemic, according to a report by

Parents and others recently took part in a program that taught them how to administer the anti-opioid medication, naloxone, the generic name for Narcan, if their children, or anyone else, overdoses on drugs, reported.

The Maxwell Institute, a Tuckahoe clinic that offers substance abuse treatment services, conducted the training and gave participants free naloxone kits to take home, the story said.

Although fear and denial can thwart the fight against the disease of addiction, experts say, there were no such feelings at the class Tuesday; parents expressed gratitude for being given the chance to be fully education, and, perhaps, to save a loved one’s life, reported.

The Maxwell Institute is associated with St. Vincent's Hospital in Harrison.

For more information about Maxwell’s adolescent program, contact Rosie Martinez at (914)-337-2388 or For information about Maxwell’s services for adults, call (914)-337-6033.

The institute is at  92 Yonkers Ave., Tuckahoe. It can be reached by calling (914)-337-6033.

Its hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays  and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
