EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Eastchester residents worried about becoming the victims of identity theft will have the opportunity to safely destroy unwanted documents when the Westchester County mobile shredder comes to Eastchester on Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, the mobile shredder will be stationed in front of Eastchester Town Hall, allowing residents the opportunity to safely destroy documents that contain personal information.
Old documents and bills offer identity thieves the information needed to commit fraud. One of the best ways to minimize the risk of identity theft is to shred documents that are no longer in use that may contain information such as addresses, phone numbers, credit card information or social security numbers.
Forms such as pre-approved credit card applications, old credit card bills, receipts, bank statements and tax returns that contain identifying information should be shredded on Saturday.
Paper generated by businesses, schools, institutions, government or municipal offices will not be accepted. County staff will inspect all paper being shredded and will reject anything labeled as commercial or institutional.
Residents may bring a maximum of four boxes of documents to the shredder. All paper must be free of clips, bindings, folders and files. No hardcover or bound ledger books will be allowed.
"As this service is gaining in popularity, residents should be prepared to wait as lines are sometimes long. However, the wait doesn't have to be that long. Come prepared," the county wrote in an announcement. "This means you've removed all metal clips, fasteners, binders, folders and hard covers and placed the papers loosely in a box. Residents must rip pages out from hard cover books for shredding and throw the covers in their regular household trash. Up to four boxes of papers are allowed for shredding."
