MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Though a trip down to New Orleans for Mardi Gras sounds great given the weather, it's not in the cards for most Westchester residents.
Thankfully, The Bayou Restaurant in Mount Vernon has opened up its doors for the past 23 years to those who want to celebrate Fat Tuesday in style without shelling out the airfare.
According to a restaurant representative, so many people flock to the restaurant from around the region for the authentic decor, Cajun cuisine, and Southern hospitality on Mardi Gras, that this March 4, its offering three different seating times.
"When you come in here, everything is so authentic, you feel like you're at the bayou in New Orleans," she said.
Studding the special menu are some of its fan favorites, such as the mud bugs, otherwise known as boiled and seasoned crawfish, which it will be serving up in five pound batches.
The Southern-fried "Kickin Chicken" is another holiday favorite, served with mashed potatoes and coleslaw.
Seafood lovers can check out the grilled pepper catfish, which is farm-raised, marinated and blackened, served with seasoned rice and greens.
Last but not least, King Cake is a traditional Mardi Gras staple -- a ring of twisted cinnamon roll dough topped with icing or sugar, usually colored purple, green, and gold in the spirit of the holiday.
Hidden somewhere within the cake is a tiny plastic baby or trinket. Whoever gets it has to do a various number of tasks, depending on where you celebrate.
Here, whoever orders the last king cake of the night will be crowned King and Queen of Mardi Gras.
Zydeco band Otis and the Hurricanes will be providing the live entertainment, and The Bayou will provide the beads and masks.
Seatings are at 6, 8 and 10 p.m., and $60 per person will get you the three-course meal, plus king cake.
For the less formal, bar seating is $20 per person.
