On Monday afternoon, members of the High School senior class, administrators and faculty members met on school grounds under an American Flag flying at half-mast to reflect upon the terrorist attacks in 2001.
The student-run and organized event included student reflections, a poetry reading and performances from the high school’s chorus. According to Student Faculty Legislature Aidan Flannery, who held co-organize the ceremony, he and his classmates “wanted to honor the thousands of people who lost their lives during the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight 93 and the hundreds of first responders who died as a result of their rescue efforts.”
“It’s important that we memorialize the events that happened 15 years ago,” he added. “We cannot forget. This tradition of remembering these tragedies needs to continue as a way to show respect for the victims.”
The Bronxville faculty has helped ensure that their students “never forget” by incorporating the terrorist attack into the curriculum. In each of the last two years, social studies teachers Chris Doyle and Steve Klurfeld have taken U.S. History students on a trip to the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum, where they got to experience the horrors of the day firsthand.
“Not only was I able to learn about the events of that tragic day, I was also able to connect on a deeper emotional level, which allowed me to have a better understanding of ow that day changed the course of history,” senior Lilly Harbin said after hearing the story of a young passenger on Flight 93 who attacked the terrorists in the cockpit once he realized his plane had been hijacked.
“It takes a real hero to accept his fate and decide to save the lives of others by risking his own.”
