Candrea, Former WWII Riveter, Dies at 91

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. - Helen Behuniak Candrea of Tuckahoe died Nov. 25 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y. She was 91.

Daughter of the late Peter and Tanka Mihalchik Behuniak, she was born Oct. 5, 1920 in Peekskill and graduated from Peekskill High School. During World War II, Candrea helped build Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bombers as a riveter in the General Motors plant in Tarrytown.

She married the late Fred A. Candrea in 1944 at Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Peekskill. Candrea worked as a secretary for Graymoor Press in Peekskill before leaving to raise her three sons.

A longtime communicant of Assumption Church, she later became a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Shrub Oak.

She is survived by her sons Eric (Myrna) Candrea, Ronald (Robin) Candrea and Glenn (Annamaria) Candrea, her brothers William Behuniak of Kingston, N.Y. and Frank Behuniak of Calabash, N.C. and five grandchildren. Candrea was predeceased by her husband Fred in 1998, her sisters Anne Marechek and Mary Barthelmes, her brothers George, Donald, Michael and Paul Behuniak and a daughter-in-law.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Assumption Church, followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery. Arrangements by Corsey-Carlone Funeral Home in Peekskill.
