Eastchester Dad and Others Celebrate Special Day

Eastchester's Bill Weinblatt works at Wise Hardware in Pelham and has a dream gift in mind for Father's Day. All he wants is a log cabin on 20 acres that borders state land.

Unfortunately, his 17- and 14-year-old daughters are not yet in the financial position to buy that for him. So Weinblatt has chosen to focus on what he considers the year-round Father's Day gift.

"I've been blessed with two beautiful girls," Weinblatt said.

Weinblatt has worked at Wise Hardware for 28 years. He said his daughters have been buying him Father's Day gifts for several years. The type of gift has been consistent, and for good reason.

"Clothing," Weinblatt said. "Because I usually don't go out and buy clothing for myself."

Weinblatt is one of several fathers in the Pelham community who celebrate the special day Sunday. Paul Scanga works at Pelham Pizzeria and Ristorante on Fifth Avenue. The father of three said that's where he'll be on Sunday.

"Father's Day is kind of low key," Scanga said.

The Mahopac resident has three children ages 16, 15 and eight. He said he has received clothes, gift certificates and small electronics from them as gifts in the past but has not put much thought into what he wants this year.

John Gianico, a retired police officer who served for 24 years on the Pelham Police Department, has two daughters. His oldest, 31, earned her doctorate and teaches at the college level. His youngest, 29, is working on earning her doctorate.

Gianico said he already has the only gift he could want.

"I just want my kids to be happy," Gianico said. "I just want them to accomplish their goals."
