EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – A 9-year-old violin student from Eastchester has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence from Canada's Royal Conservatory Music Development Program.

The award is among the top achievements for children in music programs, according to Angela Elster, vice president of academics at the Royal Conservatory.

Zoya Yan of Eastchester is taught by I-Hao Lee of the Amadeus Music School in Queens. She earned top honors on her Grade Four assessment under the Royal Conservatory program and performed at a public recital Saturday at Carnegie Hall.

Certificates of Excellence are awarded each academic year – Sept. 1 through Aug. 31 – to students in 10 levels. Candidates must score at least 80 percent on their exam and complete co-requisite theory requirements for each level and discipline.

The Royal Conservatory Music Development Program offers a national standard of success in music for students of all ages. It provides an opportunity to measure and celebrate musical accomplishments and to track progress.

“A Certificate of Excellence is an exceptional distinction," Elster said, "the result of a student’s hard work, dedication and talent. It’s a testament to the skill and creativity of the recipient. Winners represent a national standard of music achievement upheld by support from teachers and parents of music students across America.”
