Eastchester Public Library Expands Battle Of The Books Program

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Eastchester Public Library is expanding its Battle of the Books program for 2015, and will be having a meeting for interested children and parents Monday.

There will be two teams, the children’s team for current third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders; the teens’ team is the second team designed for current fifth-, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders, according to a press release.

The main Battle of the Books event will be Saturday, Oct. 17.

Participants will attend regular practices from May through October.

The children’s team will be reading the following books.

  • Because of Mr. Terupt, by Rob Buyea
  • Gregor the Overlander, by Suzanne Collins
  • Bud, Not Buddy, by Christopher Paul Curtis
  • Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, by Chris Grabenstein
  • Cracker: The Best Dog in Vietnam, by Cynthia Kadohata

Members of the teens’ team will be reading the following books.

  • How they Croaked: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous, by Georgia Bragg
  • Legend, by Marie Lu
  • Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, by Lish McBride
  • Mrs. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs
  • Okay for Now, by Gary Schmidt

Anyone currently in grades three through eight can join Battle of the Books regardless of residency, but must choose one of the Westchester County library’s team to join. Participation is free. However, any student participating must have a signed photo release, for the day of the Battle of the Books, from a parent or guardian.

The general interest meeting will be at 6 p.m. for students and their parents.
