Eastchester Resident Donates 80th Unit Of Blood

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Eastchester resident Joseph Mammana was celebrated by town officials last week after he donated his 80th unit of blood in the past three decades.

Eastchester Town Supervisor Anthony Colavita presented a proclamation to Mammana at the LeRoy Gregory Post 979 of the American Legion as he donated even more blood to help local residents.

“I would give every week if I could,” Mammana said. “[It’s] balancing the book with my maker.”

Mammana donated for the first time in 1974 as a favor to his boss, whose nephew needed a pint. He hasn’t stopped since.

“I knew you were a red-blooded American,” Colavita said to the veteran. “But you proved it 80 times.”

In addition to the Eastchester proclamation, Mammana was also presented with proclamations from Westchester County Legislator Sheila Marcotte, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Red Cross. He was also awarded a “10 gallon” pin to commemorate his service.

Mammana is a past commander of the Col. Sam DiRienzo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and is currently a vice commander at the LeRoy Gregory Post, both based in Eastchester.
