Siragusa, the former director of special education and personnel at the Tuckahoe Union Free School District, will serve students from ages 5 to 21 who have autism and speech or language impairment.
The school operates all year – with an optional summer school – and is currently enrolling students for the 2012-2013 school year. St. Dominic’s is a nonreligious school that provides growth and education opportunities to children with unique social and emotional needs, neurological impairments and learning deficiencies.
The new principal has nearly doubled the Individualized education program, expanding enrollment from eight to 15. Siragusa’s career in education has spanned nearly four decades. He has been the principal three times at Westchester County high schools and was recently recognized by the state for his work with students who suffer from autism and other intellectual abilities.
“My number one priority is to ensure the academic program at St. Dominic’s School is as diverse as possible to meet the needs of all students,” Siragusa said.
St. Dominic’s serves school districts in Rockland, Orange and Westchester County that cannot be adequately provided by local special education programs.
“Our goal is to build our students’ self-esteem and academic competence in a compassionate and supportive learning environment,” said Reginald Marra, the executive director of St. Dominic’s. “We emphasize safety, structure and clarity of behavioral expectations. Our staff employs a proactive approach and plan for our students.”
