The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch on Monday morning that extended deep into the afternoon. Later that day, southern Westchester County was put under a coastal flooding advisory along the Long Island Sound.
Although the warnings sounded like something out of a movie, busy residents wouldn’t let the weather slow them down.
“We get these warnings all the time, but nothing ever comes of them. They might be making things worse, ignorance is bliss after all,” Dave Dowell joked outside of Tuckahoe Village Hall. “If we all hunkered down every time there was a warning, we’d spend most of the fall in our basements.”
The weather forecast called for winds as high as 30 miles per hour on Tuesday, with heavy rains expected until early on Tuesday morning. Things looked more promising for Tuesday, with the sun expected to come out and temperatures expected to near 70 degrees.
At Topps Bakery, Bronxville resident Dorothy Walsh mused that it would be fantastical if a twister swept through the village.
“It would certainly be something if a tornado hit, I don’t think anyone would expect that,” she said. “I’ve been here for a long time, we don’t get a whole lot of tornado warnings.”
Although no tornadoes touched down in Westchester on Monday, residents were still flocking to Stop and Shop in Eastchester to bulk up on bread and other essential supplies.
“Even if we don’t get a tornado, it’s still supposed to be some pretty crazy weather,” he said. “We learned from Hurricane Sandy last year, you can never have enough supplies when the weather starts to get rough.”
