Eastchester Residents Looking To Beat The Summer Heat

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – As the calendar crawls closer toward the “dog days of summer,” and temperatures continue to rise, Eastchester residents are doing all they can to stay out of the sun and beat the heat.

Bronxville's Chris Coppola, 26, said that when he’s outside he tries to be in his family’s pool.

For the first time this summer, temperatures peaked at 90 degrees for two consecutive days, much to the chagrin of Eastchester and Bronxville residents who had to sweat it out outdoors.

In Bronxville, Chris Coppola, 26, said that when he’s outside he tries to be in his family’s pool, otherwise he’s been doing all he can to stay protected by air conditioning inside.

“I’m not a small guy, I’m getting a little sweaty just walking down (Park Place) to head to my car,” he joked. “This summer hasn’t too been bad so far, but the last week or so has been pretty rough.”

According to the National Weather Service, Eastchester and Bronxville will continue to see some wild weather.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued in Westchester County through Tuesday night, when temperatures will drop into the low 70s with a 60 percent chance of severe thunderstorms that may produce hail and winds reaching nearly 15 mph. Temperatures will again approach 90 degrees on Wednesday, with a slight chance of thunderstorms through Thursday night.

“It’s been a wacky summer for weather. We’ve seen it all around here,” Marvin Smith, 56, who was resolutely mowing his lawn in a sweat-drenched shirt in Eastcheter, said. “Once I’m done with this, I’m heading straight inside to cool off.”

The weather didn’t deter everyone from enjoying the day outside.

Jacob Reed used the opportunity to enjoy a chocolate ice cream cone from Haagen-Dazs in Bronxville.

“Anyone that would rather have snow and ice and winter than the summer is crazy,” the 14-year-old said. “Give me the hot weather over the cold weather any day.”
