Michael Lombardi Jr., an 11-year-old Eastchester student who attends William E. Cottle Elementary, was chosen as one of 54 winners in the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge for his signature dish: Mike’s chicken and vegetable dumpling cups.”
In all, Michael's dish was chosen out of more than 1,500 entries that were submitted across the country.
For his winning dish, Michael will be heading to the White House on Friday, July 18, to be celebrated at a state dinner celebrating nutritious, delicious, lunchtime dishes. He will be the lone junior chef representing New York.
At the state dinner, the winners will enjoy a healthy lunch with the first lady, sample some of the top dishes and will take a tour of the White House kitchen garden. The 54 winning dishes – which included samples from the District of Columbia, Guam, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico – will also be compiled and put into a cookbook that will be available at LetsMove.gov later this month.
This is the third annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, where the first lady teams with Epicurious and the departments of Education and Agriculture to challenge children to create healthy lunchtime alternatives.
“I am looking forward to hosting the winners of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge here at the White House for the third annual kids state dinner,’” she said in a statement. “This event gives us the opportunity to showcase healthy creations from talented kid chefs from across our country.”
