By collecting for the Solo Cup Brigade from summer barbecues, parties, and daily use, O’Neil alone saved 13,636 plastic cups from local landfills, helping to protect the environment for future generations.
The Solo Cup Brigade challenged participants to collect more than 1,000 cups between May and September. For each piece of waste collected through this free program, participants earn TerraCycle points that can be put toward charity gifts or converted to cash and paid to any school or charity.
By reaching the 1,000-cup goal, collectors were awarded 500 bonus points. The top five winners were rewarded with 5,000 bonus points, as well as a TerraCycle prize pack. TerraCycle recycles the collected material into various products, including trashcans, picnic tables and watering cans.
“The numbers reached by the top five collectors are impressive. Collecting more cups than the rest of the country is a reward in itself, but I am delighted to award these leaders for their efforts,” said Tom Szaky, TerraCycle CEO in a prepared statement. “Not only have they together kept over 100,000 cups from local landfills, but they have also made a recycling impact on their community.”
