Educator Nora Murphy, 71, Ex-Eastchester PTA Chief

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Nora Sharkey Murphy of Bronxville, formerly of Eastchester, died Monday, April 9, at age 71.

An educator, writer and radio host, Murphy was co-president of the Parent Teacher Association for the Tuckahoe Union Free School District from 1965 to 1987.

She was born to Peter and Cornelia Sharkey in the Bronx on July 21, 1940. A graduate of the Fordham University School of Education, Murphy held a master’s degree in English from Manhattan College. She moved to Eastchester in 1966 while teaching at Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale.

On June 18, 1972, she married Michael G. Murphy in Fordham University Church on the Rose Hill Campus. Murphy started working for the Archdiocese of New York in 1981, responsible for internal and external communications. She retired as the associate superintendent of schools for communications and marketing in 2006.

Before joining the archdiocese staff, Murphy was a reporter and education editor for The Catholic News. From 2000 to 2011, she also worked as an adjunct professor in the graduate school at the College of New Rochelle. Following her retirement, Murphy was a communications consultant to schools, dioceses and nonprofit organizations.

Murphy was the host of "Nora’s Neighbors," a radio talk show, from 2006 to 2011, and was the author of "A Youth Guide to St. Patrick’s Cathedral" (2007). She also recently served as president of the board of directors of HOPE Community Services in New Rochelle. She also served a two-year stint as chair of the St. Joseph’s Parish Council in 1988.

She is survived by a son, Michael Timothy of Covington, Wash; three grandsons and three godchildren. Murphy was predeceased by her husband in 2003.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 12, and 9 to 10:30 a.m.  Friday at Fred H. McGrath and Son Funeral Home in Bronxville. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville.
