TUCKAHOE, N.Y. — Young Avery York waived a mini-American flag in each hand while wearing a "Little Firecracker" T-shirt before the Tuckahoe fireworks display Saturday night.

Avery, 14 months, was prepared for his first fireworks display, his mother Melanie said, but when it started around 9:30 p.m. she had to shield his ears.

Other children, including Ellyanna Convery, of Eastchester, armed themselves with light-up swords and mohawks that they also waived in the air. Before the light show on the Parkway Oval Park baseball field, Ellyanna, 3, also played in the jumpy castle.

Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond announced just before the fireworks display began that Saturday's crowd was the largest the village had ever attracted for this event, which has been held since the 1950s, he said.

The fireworks display was sponsored by the Generoso Pope Foundation.
