HB Artist Series, The Faculty In Performance

The Hoff-Barthelson Music School, one of Westchester County’s most cherished and active cultural resources, has achieved national recognition as a premier community music school for its unsurpassed leadership in education, performance and outreach for over seventy years. As part of its outreach to the community, the School presents its superb faculty members on the annual HB Artist Series Recitals. Performances by these artists in a central Westchester location gives local audiences an opportunity to hear many of the finest performers on the New York music scene in an intimate setting, at prices far below those in New York’s major concert halls. Members of the School’s teaching body are among the preeminent performers in the metropolitan area who, in addition to their teaching careers, hold chairs in prominent New York orchestras, are members of world-class ensembles, and are in international demand as solo artists.

The 2014-2014 HB Artist Series, which this year features nineteen recitals by faculty members in solo performance or with chamber ensembles composed of other faculty members and guest artists, kicks off on Thursday, October 9, 8 pm, with a performance by oboe faculty member Elizabeth Condon and her fellow members of The Virtuosi Quintet (Joseph Trent, flute; Larry Tietze, clarinet; James Jeter, bassoon; and Douglas Lyons, French horn) in an eclectic program ranging from the 17th through the 21st centuries.  Bach’s Concerto No. 2 after Vivaldi arranged by Mordechai Rechtman; Ligeti’s contemporary Sechs Bagatellen; the Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 by Edvard Grieg, arranged by Joachim Linckelmann; and Quodlibet by Arne Running, are all on the program.

Critical commentary on the Virtuosi Quintet includes The New York Times: "The Virtuosi Quintet lived up to its name... bold originality...absolutely first rate; and the Heritage Concert Society in Connecticut: “When you have a group of seasoned musicians who have played together at length, there is a kind of cohesiveness and musical maturity that permeates everything they do. They effortlessly delivered a deft blend of clean phrasing and articulation, dynamic contrast and balance.  Sheer Magic!”

HBMS faculty member Elizabeth Condon is a busy freelance artist in the New York area.  In addition to performing with the Virtuosi Quintet and teaching at Hoff-Barthelson, she has toured as a guest artist in chamber ensembles and has performed as a chamber soloist in Italy and Switzerland.  Performance credits include freelance work with the New York City Opera Orchestra, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Jupiter Symphony, Long Island Philharmonic and the Greenwich Symphony (CT).  Ms. Condon has performed at Avery Fischer Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, and Carnegie Hall.  She holds a Masters of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music.  Her principal teachers include John Mack and Elizabeth Camus.  Ms. Condon is also on the faculties of the Scarsdale public schools and Tarrytown’s Hackley School.

Admission to the HB Artist Series Recitals is $18 general, $15 seniors, and free of charge for students. Season tickets to a series of three recitals are available at a reduced rate at the Music School, with recitals to be held at Greenville Community Church, located at 270 Ardsley Road in Scarsdale.
