The event is the last of several local pool swims where volunteers and teams of swimmers do laps to raise money for local cancer support, research and other related work.
Natalia Benejam, who swam as a 11-year-old last year, set her sights high to help others. “I did it because I wanted to see if I could swim a mile, and I did it,” Benejam said. “But this is because we raised money to help people.”
Proceeds from this year’s swims will benefit the Cancer Support Team (serving lower Westchester), the Tommy Palazzo Fellowship for Columbia University and Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital at New York-Presbyterian, The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Swim Across America and DeMatteo Research Laboratories, and United Hospice of Clarkstown.
