Music School Director of Artistic Programs Keeps Collection Growing

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Wilma Machover, director of Artistic Programs at Hoff-Barthelson Music School has been feeding her passion for classical music through the school’s music resource center for the last 13 years.

During that time, Machover said the resource center’s collection of music, books, CD’s DVD’s videotapes and audiotapes has flourished to become a tremendous learning tool for students and the community at large.

Machover said the resource center additionally houses a vast collection of rare recordings and instruction books ranging from early elementary to professional levels.

“It is very helpful to students and the teachers are nothing but grateful to have this resource,” she said.

The library’s collection features rare classical and jazz recordings from original composers and books that are no longer in print.

Donations, Machover said, come from music societies, organizations and private collectors, and are strictly evaluated by the school’s advisory committee made up of the finest musicians from the school’s faculty.

“Only items that are carefully taken care of are recommended to be accepted as donations,” she said.

Machover said the resource center’s collection is constantly expanding each year and will continue to grow into the future.

Faculty, enrolled students and their parents may borrow books and audio materials. However, music at the center is for reference use only. Visitors are required to make an appointment.

Established in 1944, the Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale offers a comprehensive music program of individualized instruction in both classical music and jazz idioms in combination with a sequential musicianship curriculum.

The resource center also presents programs that address the interests of teachers, students and parents that include a Summer Arts Advisory, College Advisory, and the Compose Yourself Program.

Machover, who graduated from the Juilliard School of Music as a concert pianist, said she enjoys sharing the gift of music with everyone.

"I love being a musician and sharing that passion with people,” she said.
