EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – If you know someone who has worked to improve the environment in Eastchester, you have until the end of the month to nominate that person, or group, for the town's Green Medallion Award.
The Eastchester Environmental Committee (EEC) will hold an awards program Dec. 6 to honor members of the community who have gone green.
At Tuesday's town board meeting, volunteer EEC Chair Peter McCartt discussed how 2011 Green Medallion Award winner Dave O’Neil, a fifth-grade teacher at Anne Hutchinson Elementary School, has helped Eastchester.
“Almost a year ago, we declared this the year of recycling. And all of the elementary schools have gotten on board. The model school has been Anne Hutchinson, which has reduced its waste from 8 ½ bags of garbage a day to less than half of one,” he said. “They’ve begun using food scraps for composting in the organic garden, and we want to thank Dave O’Neil for that.”
Students are eligible to win the Green Medallion Award, as are schools, community groups, trade associations, businesses and government entities.
According to the Environmental Committee, various activities qualify for the award. Recycling and using recycled materials, such as composting, as well as waste reduction and cleaning up litter are important aspects of the award. The committee is also looking for people who prevent pollution by walking or biking, protect the environment, beautify Eastchester and increase awareness of environmental alternatives.
“If you know of anyone or any entity that is worthy for the Green Medallion Award, email info@greeneastchester.com to nominate them,” McCartt said. “We want to thank everybody in the town for elevating the three R’s throughout the year: reduce, reuse, recycle.”
