NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Following the events of Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend, city leaders in New Rochelle have planned an interfaith prayer vigil for members of the community.

White nationalists were rallying to protest against the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee when tensions escalated and the situation turned violent on Saturday, ending with 19 people in the hospital and one woman dead after being rammed by a car and two state troopers being killed in a helicopter crash.

The event led to conflicts throughout the country, prompting the prayer vigil in New Rochelle in an effort to ease tensions, which will be held at the New Rochelle Methodist Church on North Avenue. The prayer service is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night.

According to New Rochelle United Methodist Church Rev. Michelle Lewis, “with the recent acts of violence, death and hate speech, it is becoming increasingly important that we join together to show the community and the world that we stand in solidarity with each other.”
