Scarsdale Yoga Studios Hopes to Fill Upscale Niche

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – There was a time 10 years ago when it was hard to find a yoga studio, Erinn Cayehal Chang said Wednesday. That is no longer true, especially in Scarsdale, as a fourth studio, Scarsdale Yoga Studios, is preparing to open this spring at 7 Popham Road and Depot Place.

"In recent years, we have seen yoga shift from being a relatively unknown and 'fringe' practice to becoming more main-stream," said Chang, the studio's managing director. "As people try yoga, they experience for themselves the benefits of the practice, whether it is for stress management, injury recovery, fitness or for the pure enjoyment of it.”

According to Chang, Scarsdale Yoga Studios is not duplicating the experience already available.

"What we are offering is an alternative to the common studio, an option for discerning yoga practitioners with a model and approach that is unlike any other,” Chang said.

The owners of Scarsdale Yoga Studios have experienced some of the luxurious studios in Europe and Asia, which are unlike yoga studios found in the United States.

One of the owners, Irene Sinyavin, said her business will be different from the time a person walks in the door

"It's a proper introduction to yoga. For beginners, it's a completely different introduction in Europe and Asia; here they just throw you into yoga without teaching you what yoga is about. What we are trying to do here is a proper introduction of yoga to the community,” Sinyavin said.

Not only will the yoga itself be different, both women said, but the surroundings will transcend anything else available in the area. The third-floor, 7,000 square foot location with floor-to-ceiling windows will offer views of the Bronx River from the studio and the organic juice bar and café. The facility will have amenities that include spa-like locker rooms and services such as laundry service for yoga gear. Classes will run from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and the location is meant to make the studio easily accessible for commuters. There will also be free valet parking.

Sinyavin, a Scarsdale resident, was born and raised in Russia and moved to New York 20 years ago to complete her studies at Columbia University. Before founding the Scarsdale Yoga Studios, she worked in the institutional equities division of Morgan Stanley. She left the corporate world because she wanted to devote all her time to family.

Co-owner Olga Morozova was born and raised in Moscow, where she earned her Master's degree economics from the Moscow Financial Academy. Formerly of Bronxville, she has two children and currently resides with her husband in London.

Director of Yoga Greg Barringer has been practicing for 20 years, and has completed advanced studies in yoga and meditation. He holds a 200-hour certification from Kripalu School of Yoga, the largest Yoga center in North America. Greg is also 500-hour certified by the Amrit Yoga Institute and is a certified Thai Yoga practitioner.
