Tuckahoe Elementary Students Serenade Citi Field Crowd

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – A group of Tuckahoe elementary school students took to the field at Citi Field earlier this week to perform the National Anthem in front of a national audience before the New York Mets faced the Toronto Blue Jays.

On Monday, under the direction of William E. Cottle music teachers Rachel Axelrod and Keiha Kim, 115 students took the trek from Tuckahoe to Queens to serenade an announced crowd of 22,172 fans who attended the game.

After receiving a rousing ovation from the thankful crowd, the students, their families, friends and fans enjoyed an exciting game that saw the Mets top the Blue Jays in extra innings after their closer blew a save in the top of the ninth.

It was a long road to get the Cottle students to Citi Field. Alexrod sent a clip to the team earlier this year as part of the New York Mets annual school group search. Months later, they finally learned that they were chosen to kick off Monday’s game.

Prior to the performance, the school was asked to sell a select number of tickets to Monday’s game. Despite being asked for just 200 sales, the community purchased nearly 1,000 tickets.

“I am so proud of our students and entire music staff,” William E. Cottle Principal George Albano stated. “We were asked to sell a minimum of 200 tickets, and when all was said and done, the Cottle community sold over 850 tickets for this wonderful event.”
