Tuckahoe HS Graduate Enters Merchant Marine Academy

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. -- Bronxville resident Alejandro J. Urbina, a 2016 graduate of Tuckahoe High School has entered the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, as a member of the class of 2020.

He is a a maritime logistics and security major and a member of the Merchant Marine Academy Regimental band.

After he graduates, Urbina  plans to join the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) where he will work towards becoming a search and rescue pilot. 

The academy is the only federal service academy where graduates earn three graduation credentials, a bachelor of science degree, an officer's commission in any branch of the military and a U.S. Coast Guard license as a deck or engineering officer. 

In preparation for Coast Guard license exams, each midshipman will spend a minimum of 300 days at sea aboard U.S. flagged vessels involved in global trade or military operations. 

As part of their service obligation, Kings Point graduates serve five years on active-duty in the military or sail five years as officers in the U. S. merchant marine and six years in the reserves.
